Cats Protection estimates there are nine million stray cats and 1.5 million feral cats in the UK alone. Yorkshire Cat Rescue is just one charity attempting to tackle this issue, saving the lives of abandoned and unwanted cats across Yorkshire and parts of Lancashire. The organisation offers a rehoming service for cats, accommodating them at an appropriate centre where they are nourished and treated for any illnesses. There is no central funding for Yorkshire Cat Rescue meaning the money they receive is all acquired through fundraising.

Recent years have seen significant cat overpopulation in the UK. Charities such as Yorkshire Cat Rescue are critical for the survival of cats and kittens that are unable to be homed. According to the RSPCA, officers rescued more than 22,000 cats and received more than 150,000 calls about cats to its national control centre. The Cat Population Control Manager, Carrie Stones commented: ‘Sadly, cats are the most rescued animal by our team, and we receive hundreds of thousands of calls about their welfare each year.’

Yorkshire Cat Rescue strives to tackle this ongoing issue in the best way it can and relies on public generosity to continue this. The charity’s aims are ‘to relieve the suffering of cats who are in need of care and attention and, in particular, to provide or maintain rescue homes or other facilities for the reception and care of such unwanted animals and their treatment.’

Craig Astbury is the IT Director at Jigsaw Insurance and is also an advocate for Yorkshire Cat Rescue. Jigsaw Insurance has been an Aquarium client since 2014 and this year, Craig and the Pet Insurance team are taking part in an abseil for the charity. Craig has commented “We encourage and support regular fundraising events across the company – often through our Charity Committee. We’re supporting Yorkshire Cat Rescue, and money raised will help cover the cost of getting cats back to health before being rehomed.”

At Aquarium, we are extremely proud to support Craig and the Pet Insurance Team and will continue to encourage donations for this incredibly heart-warming cause.
