International Dog Day falls on 26th August, 2021. The days aims to celebrate all dogs, mixed breed and pure and raise awareness of the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.
Dog lover and pet expert Colleen Paige founded National Dog Day in the United States in 2004 and it has since been embraced by other dog-loving countries to evolve into International Dog Day. Collen Paige chose August 26th to mark the date she first adopted a dog, when she was 10 years old.
Why was International Dog Day created?
The aim of International Dog Day is to raise awareness of the condition of animals as well as to encourage adoption and to celebrate all dogs across the world. In particular, the day aims to get people to acknowledge dogs that need to be rescued, plus recognise that dogs bring us comfort, protect us, and save lives. It also seeks to discourage people from buying dogs from pet stores that support unethical breeders and puppy farms, while encouraging the adoption of dogs in need from rescue shelters.
How to celebrate
At Aquarium our furry friends often visit the office, and it is not unusual for us to have 10-15 pets all roaming the office at once. Our team will be celebrating International Dog Day by taking our dogs to their favourite spots for a walk or providing some healthy treats to our pets.
In the best traditions of International Dog Day, it is always worth considering whether to adopt a rescue dog as an alternative to buying a puppy.
